Going for a more vintage feel with the next illustration, I created this character design of a vintage rockabilly girl mechanic set over a tattoo style rose background, originally created as a pencil drawing and finished in in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Adding some half tone patterns to the shading gives it a more retro pulp look but it also helps when printing. I’m using the design for t-shirts and direct to garment printing and gradients don’t seem to do as well as half toning when shading or blending colours.
To complete the retro vibe, this bad-ass mechanic babe is drawn in a comic, pop art style with plenty of attitude inspired by hot rods, motorcycles, 1950s rock and roll and old school tattoo design.
